Subtalar joint

The subtalar joint is located between the ankle and os calcis (heel bone).  Hindfoot pain can be from this joint and can be caused by many conditions.

  • Tarsal coalition
    • In adolescents and young adults an abnormal join occurs between the two bones
    • It can cause pain, deformity & disability
  • Arthritis
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Osteoarthrits
    • Post-traumatic arthritis
    • Inflammatory arthritis

All of these problems can be very disabling.  There are options for treatment which are both non-operative and operative.  Investigations will include blood tests, plain X-rays and most likely special imaging using CT or MRI scanning.
