HALLUX RIGIDUS

This is a condition resulting in pain & stiffness in the joint at the base of the big toe. It is commonly caused by arthritis and can be very disabling. There are several possible treatments depending on how advanced the condition is. Generally a stiffer soled shoe will be more comfortable than a soft one. An injection of local anaesthetic and steroid may be used to help reduce the pain.

Surgery is frequently required and options include:

  • MUA - manipulating the joint under anaesthetic
  • Cheilectomy - removing the top of the joint to improve the range of motion
  • Arthrodesis - stiffening the joint to abolish pain (also called fusion)
  • Replacement - Inserting an artificial joint
